When elk cows are in rut (also known as the elk estrus cycle), their bodies produce special pheromones to attract elk bulls. Elk cows are typically in heat for three months, spanning August from through to the end of October; however, it is the light entering an elk’s eyes that actually triggers the estrus cycle. This means that, depending on the part of the country you’re hunting in and how much sunlight the region has received, it’s not always easy to reliably predict when the local elk population is in heat.
